BIO:
Dyane Harwood graduated with a degree in English and American Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. A freelance writer for over two decades, she has interviewed many bestselling authors including Kay Redfield Jamison, SARK, and Anthony Bourdain.
In 2007, Dyane was diagnosed with postpartum bipolar one disorder after her second baby was born. Dyane’s memoir Birth of a New Brain – Healing from Postpartum Bipolar Disorder was endorsed by Kay Redfield Jamison and 20+ mental health luminaries. It is the first book to cover this form of bipolar disorder. Dyane presented a webinar for the International Bipolar Foundation about postpartum bipolar disorder, and she was the founder of the DBSA/Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Santa Cruz County Chapter. She facilitated free women’s support groups in Santa Cruz, Felton, and Ben Lomond for seven years.
Dyane has written for SELF Magazine, BP/Bipolar Magazine, Fit Magazine, MOODS Magazine, The Mighty, and The Huffington Post. Locally, her articles have been published in Good Times, the Press Banner, Monterey Bay Parent, and NAMI Santa Cruz County’s e-letter She has been a guest on numerous podcasts including The PsychCentral Show, The Mental Health Book Club, Mom and Mind, Chili and Mimosas, Voices for Change 2.0, Adventures With Postpartum Depression and The Dr. Denise Show. More recently, Dyane was a guest on the progressive Bipolarcast and The Keto Vegan podcasts to discuss using a well-formulated vegan ketogenic diet specifically for bipolar disorder.
Dyane was honored to speak at the 1st Ellenhorn Metabolic Psychiatry Conference in 2023. The audience, which consisted of several hundred medical professionals, were introduced to her success using a vegan ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder and perimenopause symptoms.
Dyane has practiced a vegan ketogenic diet for two years under the guidance of her psychiatrist Dr Dale Dallas and the renowned ketogenic nutritionist Denise Potter of Advanced Ketogenic Therapies.
Dyane is a member of The Vegan Society Researcher Network and she became a vegan late in life, at age 47. Dyane’s currently writing her second book Birth of a Vegan Keto Brain. She lives in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California with her 100% vegan family: her husband of twenty-two years, the geologist/author Craig Harwood, their two teen daughters, and their Scottish collie Lucille.
